The Nest Hub (2nd generation) has finally been updated to Fuchsia

Google has started bringing its internally developed Fuchsia OS to the public with its Nest Hub devices, the first of which was the first generation Nest Hub in 2021. Moreover, the Nest Hub Max was the second to get the Fuchsia OS update last year. The second generation Nest Hub is said to be the third to get the update.

The search giant told 9to5Google that it’s rolling out the Fuchsia OS-based update to its second-generation Nest Hub, launching in 2021. The update will apparently be slowly rolled out across users, first hitting Nest Hub consumers who previously signed up for preview updates. program via the Google Home app before rolling it out to more users.

Although it is a new home operating system coming to the Google smart screen, it will not fundamentally change any functionality on the device, similar to the previous versions on the first Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max devices.

About the rollout of Fuchsia OS on Nest Hub devices, Google earlier stated that “there is no impact on the user experience, and the update will come as a standard device update. There is also no impact for developers targeting Nest Hub devices.”

Nest Hub users wondering if they’ve upgraded from Cast OS to Fuchsia OS will have to navigate through Settings to check the build number either on the smart display or via the associated Google Home app. On the screen, go to Settings > Device info > Technical info, Where you should find the “Fuchsia Version” number which indicates that the smart display has been updated to the new operating system.

The new update notes Google’s continued support for Nest Hub devices, though support for third-party smart displays was killed recently. This move was made before the launch of the Pixel Tablet, which seems to be positioned as both a tablet and a smart home device thanks to its dock. It’s still somewhat unclear where Google’s smart home allegiances lie, so hopefully we’ll hear more about the company’s plans at Google I/O 2023.
