The company launched its flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 in February and followed it up with the Galaxy A54 in March 2023. If you are planning to buy a new smartphone, these are probably some of the best smartphones that you can buy right now.
However, the difference in price between them is significant. This raises the question: how do these two devices compare, and is the flagship worth the extra cost? In this article, we will compare the Samsung Galaxy A54 and Galaxy S23 and help you decide which smartphone is best for you.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 is the more budget-friendly option of the two, priced at $449 in the US. Unlike other regions, Samsung only launched the 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage variant in the US. It is available for purchase from almost all major carriers and sellers. And at the time of writing, you can get the Samsung Galaxy A54 for $75 off, bringing it to just $375.
The Samsung Galaxy S23, as a flagship model, comes with a higher starting price of $799. Samsung offers two storage variants of the S23, with 128GB and 256GB options. Similar to Galaxy A54, this smartphone is also available from all major carriers and vendors. At the time of this writing, Amazon is offering a flat $100 discount on the smartphone, bringing the price down to $699.
Design and build
Starting with the design, you will notice that both the Samsung Galaxy A54 and Samsung Galaxy S23 sport a minimalist design. Both smartphones come with a plain back, single cutouts for the rear cameras, and a punch-hole cutout on the front. However, this is where the similarities end.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 features a premium build complete with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and back, and a metal frame, as well as a wide range of color options. In contrast, the Galaxy A54 has a less premium body with a plastic frame and back and Gorilla Glass 5 on the front, and it’s only available in four colors.
In addition, the S23 has a better IP68 durability rating compared to the IP67 rating of the A54. The S23 is also lighter, weighing 168g compared to the A54’s ~200g. However, the Galaxy A54’s large screen and battery likely contribute to its weight, which we’ll discuss in more detail later.
If you are someone who uses their smartphone and uses their smartphone without a protective case, the difference in build materials and weight may be an important factor. However, if you’re someone who puts a protective case on their smartphone — especially with so many great cases available for both the Samsung Galaxy A54 and Galaxy S23 — that difference might not be so critical.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A54 offers excellent value for its price point in terms of build materials. However, if you are looking for the highest quality, the S23 is undoubtedly the best choice.
an offer
Moving to the front, the Samsung Galaxy A54 offers a larger screen of 6.4 inches. This is a high-end panel that features a Super AMOLED FHD display, FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ playback, and a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. However, the Galaxy A54 has a larger chin than the Galaxy S23.
On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S23 features a slightly smaller 6.1-inch display that offers similar high-end features such as a Dynamic AMOLED display, FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, as well as HDR10+ playback. Where the S23 beats the A54, however, is in terms of peak brightness, at 1,750 nits.
performance
One of the main differences between these smartphones is the chipset that they run on. The Samsung Galaxy S23 features the second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 processor, which delivers industry-leading performance and efficiency. Paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, this smartphone can handle any task you throw at it with ease.
On the other hand, the Galaxy A54 features Samsung’s own Exynos 1380 chipset. This chipset has powerful Cortex-A78 cores and Cortex-A55 energy-efficient cores, but it lacks Cortex-X series cores for high-intensity tasks. In addition, the A54 has only 6GB of RAM, which may be disappointing for some users. However, the A54 has a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion – a feature the Galaxy S23 lacks.
Both smartphones run on OneUI 5.1 based on Android 13 out of the box. As expected, though, the Galaxy S23 comes with some premium features like the always-on display and support for the Galaxy Enhance-X app. It’s worth noting that both devices will get four major Android updates and up to five years of security updates — props for Samsung for not making a difference between mid-range and flagship devices when it comes to software support.
While you may not notice much of a difference in daily use, the Samsung Galaxy S23 definitely performs better out of the two. If you are someone who plays a lot of games or uses their smartphone for a lot of intensive tasks, the S23 is a better buy. Moreover, the slower A54 chipset may become a significant factor affecting device performance over time.
camera
Samsung Galaxy A54 and Galaxy S23 feature a triple camera setup. However, both smartphones use different sensors. Galaxy A54 features a 50MP f/1.8 primary sensor accompanied by a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and a 5MP f/2.4 camera. On the other hand, the Galaxy S23 comes with a top-notch camera setup. This includes a 50MP f/1.8 main sensor, a 10MP f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens.
The main cameras of smartphones take excellent pictures. While the S23’s camera is slightly superior to the A54’s camera in low light, that’s to be expected. While both phones feature ultra-wide cameras, the S23’s 3x telephoto sensor proves more practical than the A54’s macro lens.
In terms of video recording, the S23 can record up to 8K at 30fps, while the A54 maxes out at 4K at 30fps. However, the A54 beats the S23 in the front camera department with its 32MP sensor (versus the S23’s 12MP). If you are a social media enthusiast and regularly take high-quality selfies, then the Galaxy A54 might be the best pick.
The battery is charging
Samsung Galaxy A54 features a massive 5,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy S23 comes with a smaller 3,900mAh cell. While the A54 can easily last a full day on a single charge, the S23 isn’t far behind. With its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and software optimizations, the S23 also delivers impressive battery life. However, if you need a phone that can make it through long work days or long periods without access to a charger, the A54 is the better choice.
In terms of charging speed, both phones offer fast 25W wired charging. However, the Galaxy S23 has an advantage over the A54 with its wireless charging capabilities. Not only does the S23 feature 15W wireless charging, but it also supports reverse wireless charging, which allows you to charge compatible accessories like the Galaxy Buds 2. Unfortunately, the A54 lacks wireless charging support.
Samsung Galaxy A54 vs Galaxy S23: Which Smartphone Is Best For You?
If you want a smartphone that offers the best overall experience, Samsung Galaxy S23 is the best choice. It boasts a stunning display, premium compact build, top-notch cameras, and a powerful chip that can handle the most demanding tasks for years to come. The only downside to the S23 is its battery life, which should last a full day.

However, Samsung Galaxy A54 is still an excellent smartphone that offers better value for money. It comes with features like expandable storage and a larger battery which the S23 lacks.
