It’s been a few months since ChatGPT: The AI chatbot has gone from relative obscurity to Boost your web searches And Pass medical exams And a lot more, and it’s only going to get stronger from this point on. All of which might make you wonder if you could use it on your phone instead of those tired old digital assistants from Google and Apple, which now seem pretty basic by comparison.
You can actually use ChatGPT on your phone, as a kind of replacement for Google Assistant or Siri (although those apps will still be available alongside them). That should mean you get more detailed and accurate responses to a lot of queries, though it won’t be as good at searching for contacts or turning off smart lights.
In addition to the options we’ve outlined below, it’s also worth noting that you can access ChatGPT Through a web browser On your phone too, which might better suit your needs if you don’t need Voice Access.
How to add ChatGPT to Android
Running ChatGPT on Android in Google Assistant style means harnessing the power and versatility of it Tasker, a one-stop shop for all kinds of Android tricks and tricks. The app will cost you $3.49, but it’s useful in a whole bunch of different ways besides everything we’re discussing here. You will also need a comrade Automatic notification The app, which is free.
The first time you run Tasker, choose the full experience and accept all settings prompts as they are displayed. After that, use your phone’s browser to open it this link For Tasker’s custom ChatGPT project: Choose importsthen Yes to confirm the action. You can then create a prompt that tells ChatGPT how to respond to you: you can name it, change its tone, and so on. The default is “You are a helpful assistant”, which is fine.
You will then be prompted to enter the ChatGPT API key – that is Create an account If you don’t already have one, go to This page and choose Create a new secret key for Tasker to use. Note that you will need to add a payment method and pay for your API access: it depends on usage and will usually be very cheap (small portions of a cent per day), and if you like you can set up spending limits that you won’t be able to go over.
Paste your key into Tasker, choose Yes In the next dialog box, then choose Yes again to start the setup routine. Next, you need to create a home screen shortcut: tap and hold an empty area on one of your phone’s home screens, and select widgets and then a task Under Tasker, then select your widget: the main ones are new chatAnd Chat continuesAnd voice chatand you can add them all if you like.
Note that the last option, which lets you talk to ChatGPT using your voice, requires another API from the Say WaveNet service: all instructions here. Again, you need to sign up for a payment method, but the free allowance is generous (up to four million characters per month). Other than that, you can write your queries on ChatGPT and get written answers in return.
You can run these tasks using the Google Assistant, if you don’t think it’ll be an inconvenience: just say “Hey Google, run (task name) in Tasker” and it will pop up. The name of the task can be New Chat, Continue Chat, or Voice Chat, so it’s the same as the tools we looked at earlier. You can also say “set assistant character” as the name of the task to change the behavior of ChatGPT on your phone.
How to add ChatGPT to iOS
On the iPhone, we can integrate ChatGPT through the Shortcuts app, which allows you to automate all kinds of tasks and processes within iOS (As we covered earlier). The custom ChatGPT acronym we’re using here was put together by developer and all-around Apple fan Federico Viticci. It is called S-GPTand it’s free to use – although you can decide to pay for a deeper technical dive into coding and more ideas for prompts.
As on Android, you need to ChatGPT account, and you need to add a pay-as-you-go payment method to access the ChatGPT API – you can check your usage at any time, it’s pretty cheap (just think a dollar or two a year, usually), and there’s an option to set spending limits so there’s always a maximum for the amount you will be charged. You will need to go to This page Creates a new key for S-GPT.
To download and install the shortcut, head over to S-GPT abbreviation page in your iPhone’s browser, and select Shortcut setting to paste in your API key. Note that the same shortcut can work across macOS and the Apple Watch, too, if you want to access ChatGPT from your wrist or laptop — just make sure all your devices are signed in with the same Apple ID and your shortcuts should sync across.
You also need a second companion acronym to do all this work, and It’s called S-GPT Encoder. Again, open the link on your iPhone, then choose Add shortcutAnd you’re all set. from abbreviations tab In the Shortcuts app, you can click the three dots next to S-GPT to see how it all works, or click the entire shortcut icon to launch it (as you would any of your shortcuts).
The first time you run S-GPT, you’ll need to give it permission to run the S-GPT Encoder shortcut, and to connect to the Open AI servers – once you do that the first time, you don’t have to do it again. As with any of your shortcuts, you can interact with S-GPT via Siri using your voice, or place a link to it on the home screen.
There are some really creative ways to use this S-GPT acronym, as you’ll see if you turn to it mac stories: You can get it to create Apple Music playlists based on your criteria for example, or have it handle the text currently in the iOS clipboard.
