Resorting to a chatbot to express your deepest love can make you feel cold, lazy, or even miserable. But those who harness the technology say it can help break through the writer’s block caused by the high expectations set on a special day. Some people feel comfortable using AI in the most intimate aspects of their lives.
To some, using ChatGPT to help with weighty words like wedding vows may seem like a joke, but it can also turn out phrases that defy expectations. Michelle Albert, who lives in Seattle, says she asked the robot to write vows, expecting something funny. Instead, the output was great, although generic as well. She made general references to her fiancé’s intelligence, kindness, and beauty, and delivered cliches like, “I love you more than words can say.”
However, the unexpected fluency piqued Albert’s interest and prompted her to begin writing personal vows. “The best use case for me is just inspiration,” says Alpert. She also used ChatGPT to develop ideas for how to have difficult conversations with family and friends about downsizing her wedding, which means some of the people she loves won’t be invited. She and her fiancé also used the robot to help plot the itinerary for their five-day Hawaiian honeymoon.
Joy, a popular wedding planning website and app, now has a ChatGPT-based AI tool that aims to help overcome writer’s block. A drop-down menu allows people to choose from a wide range of options, including writing speeches and toasts, crafting thank-you notes, and crafting simple wedding hashtags, such as or “#MyOhMaui” for a Hawaiian wedding or “#SailingToMarriageOnTheHighSeas” for a specific person in hacker style .
Vishal Joshi, CEO and co-founder of Joy, says he understands the initial concerns some may have about AI using such personal touches. “Are we trying to make something very emotional and personal — are we trying to automate that?” Joshi says. “We’ve had this struggle.”
But some Joy users seem to have moved past any concerns. Joshi says generating promises and toasts has become the most popular function for AI features since they were introduced in March. He feels it fits with the fact that long before artificial intelligence came on the scene, many people struggled to express their feelings on their wedding day. “Putting those feelings on paper is much harder than any of us will ever admit,” says Joshi.
To generate speeches, Joy prompts the user to provide memorable story details about the couple and their relationship, such as how they met or when the person first met their future relatives. For vows, the app asks the person to highlight what they love most about their partner. They can then choose a style of delivery, instructing the system to generate something that might come from a friend, Shakespearean, or pessimistic ex. One suggestion begins in playwright style: “For a walk on the beach before us, I would give the world to share, your values of rest and bustle match mine, and that is so rare.”
As with anything a ChatGPT-style bot spouts, AI-engineered promises or speeches can include anecdotes that may not be true. In WIRED tests, it can take several tries and edits before ChatGPT includes enough detail about a spouse or memory to make something feel personal and original enough to be read to guests and witnesses.
