TL; DR
- Google Images on the web is making a “more powerful search” experience.
- Users can now use phrases and ideas for prompts to find images.
- It seems that the update has not yet made its way to Android.
One of the most useful tools in Google Photos is getting an upgrade. This upgrade will make it easier for you to find the exact images you are looking for.
As he discovered it 9to5Google, some users see a new blue text bubble below the search bar in Google Images on the web. By asking users to “experience a more powerful search,” Google appears to be offering a more powerful version of its search bar.
Search will now allow users to submit more complex prompts such as phrases and ideas. Some of the examples given include “Colorful Sunset”, “Peaceful Garden”, and “Cinderella”.
Additionally, if you’ve ever tagged faces, you can combine those prompts with those names to find photos of those people in specific locations. For example, typing “Dave on a beach” will bring up any image relevant to your query.
It seems that when you use these complex prompts, Google Images will show you the “most relevant to your search” section. This section sorts the image by relevance level, not by date.
For now, it appears that the upgrade has only been applied to the web version of Google Photos. If you go to your phone, open Google Photos, and submit a complex prompt, you won’t receive any results.
According to a statement provided by a Google spokesperson, the search bar upgrade appears to be an “experiment”. It’s possible that Google wants to test the feature before expanding it to mobile. But we’ll just have to wait and see if it eventually finds its way to Android.
