Online chat service disagreement He said in a blog post on Wednesday that he will require all users to change their username in the coming weeks.
The service wrote that every new username will be preceded by a sign (@), and can include lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores. No other special characters will be allowed, and new usernames will drop the four-digit number attached to the end of usernames, such as #1337. Changes will result in usernames appearing similar to other social media names, such as Twitter and Instagram.
Discord co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevsky wrote online that the changes are meant to make it easier for people to find and connect with each other.
“Our existing usernames can often be too complex or ambiguous for people to easily remember and share,” he wrote.
You can’t change your name yet, though. You’ll have to wait for Discord to prompt you in the app to change your username, and it’ll start with old accounts first. The application will also guide you on how to change your username.
Discord will instruct you to change your username when it’s your turn.
You will still be able to set a unique display name separate from your username.
“Your display name is basically how you will appear across Discord,” the service wrote. “This is how other users will see it in DMs where no friend nickname is set, on servers where no server nickname is set, and in other places such as friend requests.”
