The theme for this year’s Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” in honor of the late German fashion designer who passed away in 2019. During his 60-year career, Lagerfeld became the creative director of such notable fashion houses as Chanel and Fendi, and eventually founded his own brand.
He was also accused of making anti-religious, racist and misogynistic comments before his death, making this year’s Met Gala topic not without controversy.(Opens in a new tab).

Most of the Met Gala guests were dressed in Lagerfeld’s signature black and white outfit, adding pops of pink and red as well. However, some preferred to be more adventurous with the theme, opting instead for costumes that pay homage to Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, Choupette.
Choupette is an 11 year old Birman cat that he had A sarcastic Twitter fan account(Opens in a new tab) For more than a decade, he used his maids to be pampered and taken care of, leaving a large fortune in Lagerfeld’s will. Also, Lagerfeld said he would marry his cat(Opens in a new tab) If legal.
Given Lagerfeld’s great affection for his feline companion, it’s no surprise that some Met Gala attendees turned to the famous cat for outfit inspiration. Results varied.
