What you need to know

  • A new update is rolling out for Google TV devices with performance and storage improvements.
  • Google claims that this update will reduce app sizes, and introduces Hibernation.
  • The update also aims to reduce loading times when waking up or interacting with your Google TV device.

While a lot of our focus has been on potential devices that Google is set to unveil at I/O 2023, the company hasn’t stopped releasing updates to its existing devices. The latest one is coming to Google TV devices, and this update looks really cool.

In a new post in the Google TV community, there are two significant improvements being made to the device, with the first focusing on storage. If you’ve ever owned a Chromecast with Google TV, you’ll know how frustrating it can be when you find you’ve filled up your 8GB of storage.

Google states that this update will reduce app sizes by leveraging Android App Bundles for Google TV, reducing app sizes “by approximately 25%.” Hibernating apps is also a fairly new feature coming to the platform, which will “automatically force apps to hibernate when not used for more than 30 days.”

App Hibernation is similar to the feature in the best Android phones, implemented in Android 12. The apps themselves aren’t actually deleted from your device, but instead, temporary files are removed, which helps save space. And now, the feature is coming to Google TV devices, which are more space-constrained.
