BeReal is launching another feature that seems to defeat the purpose of the app: a feed dedicated to famous people. Instead of exchanging daily photos with your friends, you’ll now be able to see what the world’s top athletes, artists, and activists are up to.
BeReal, the app that promotes itself as “your friends in real life,” gives you different windows of time each day to take a selfie and a frontal photo that’s shared with friends. The whole point of the app is to randomly share what you’re up to with friends, whether you’re doing something boring like lying in bed or sitting in front of your computer at work.
But now, BeReal is throwing strangers into the mix. Her new feed, called RealPeople, is a “curated timeline of the World’s Most Interesting People” featuring an “ever-changing group” of notable people from around the world. The whole point of this feature is to show that celebrities are normal human beings just like the rest of us (yeah, truly).
“RealPeople is not about influencing, collecting likes or comments, or promoting brands,” BeReal wrote. “You won’t see photoshopped photos, product recommendations, or disguised ads as posts. It’s trying to show that we’re all more alike than we think.”
The app is only testing the feature in the UK at the moment, which you can access by selecting Discovery tab and then hit real people. From here, you can reply to posts with a RealMoji while scrolling through the timeline, as well as hide and flag posts. BeReal also notes that you can suggest someone (or yourself) to its RealPeople timeline through this form, though it’s unclear if BeReal users have actually lined up for its feed.
