The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is rumored to get a 3.7GHz boost frequency upgrade

Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 chipset has pushed flagship phones to another level in terms of speed and overall performance of our apps. A new leak from Chinese news outlet MyDrivers indicates that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform will bump its frequency to 3.7GHz (via GSMArena). Qualcomm’s single Cortex-X4 core is claimed to be responsible for the newly discovered performance boost.

The outlet also cited a prominent Weibo leaker, who indicated that the upcoming chip may be in line with some substantial internal changes. It seems that SD 8 Gen 3 is classified as an SM8650 model and may adopt a 1+5+2 internal architecture. Considering the design change, this means that the new chip can have 1 extra-large core, 5 large cores, and 2 small cores.

These rumors about its interior design compounded a two-month-old rumor that suggested the same basic architecture.

Another upgrade could be in the cards as well, as the chip is rumored to have an Adreno 750 GPU. It also looks like Qualcomm will continue to let TSMC manufacture franchises for the chip but will implement a processing upgrade. It is proposed that the chip migrate from N4 to N4P which is about 6% more efficient than the previous process.

Taking the leaks at face value, the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Prime Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2GHz. Samsung Galaxy S23 series was launched with its exclusive flagship variant but its speed was only slightly higher than the vanilla version. Internally, the SD 8 Gen 2 contained a 1 + 4 + 3 architecture. If the rumor mill proves accurate, Qualcomm may just swap cores in the name of speed and efficiency.

Last month’s rumors make us feel like we’re flipping through a potential internal core setup, but it’s also talked about possible Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 support for the 64-bit era only among smartphones. Adreno 750 GPU may be upgraded to Adreno Gen 7.9.0 chip, which could push its max frequency to 770MHz.
