Sony ended its fiscal year closing the March quarter on a high. It posted a record operating profit of 1.21 trillion yen (8.1 billion euros converted), beating its expectations. Sony expects sales for the next fiscal year, ending in March 2024, to be around 11.5 trillion yen — about the same as this year.
Much of this success is due to the PlayStation 5’s outstanding sales. Sony sold 19.1 million consoles in the fiscal year – compared to 11.5 million units sold in the previous fiscal year, which was marred by supply chain issues. Sony hopes to sell 25 million this fiscal year (by March 2024).
Sony is close to 40 million PlayStation 5 sales.
Sony’s gaming division reported revenue of ¥3.64 trillion (€24.3 billion, converted).
The other big gainer for Sony was its chip division. Sony’s image sensor business generated revenue of ¥212.2 billion (€1.4 billion, converted) – up 36% year-on-year.
But Sony expects its imaging chip business to drop 5.7% in the current fiscal year due to slowing demand, particularly from Chinese smartphone makers.
