Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 A rare thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While many of the heroes have graced the trilogy of films in the saga, Except for Spider-ManNone of these trilogies felt like one complete story. Stories with endings. Stories where, if the director wanted, they could — let’s say — kill off a character or two. In most cases, as with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Ant-Man, we expected those characters to return after their three sequels.
For some reason — perhaps because writer-director James Gunn has since left Marvel to its biggest competitor, DC-with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3You just have a sense that anything can happen. Everyone could die in a single explosion and it wouldn’t matter since Gunn is done with the MCU forever. And so, with all that in mind, we wondered: Did Marvel Studios, and specifically its president Kevin Feige, give Gunn full rein to do whatever he wanted? Or were certain characters, twists, etc. off-limits? Basically, how much slack was given to Gunn to tell his story?
Feige said during a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press conference earlier today. “As slack as he shall give, so shall he be granted.” Jenn agreed. “I get all the slack,” he said, “especially on this one.”
As a quick follow-up, Feige was asked specifically about concerns about killing off characters. “In the previous films, we had some discussions about that but not about this film,” he said. “This was really about seeing it through because it was always designed to be a 3D tool.” That’s right, Gunn agreed.
So what does that mean? Will the Guardians emerge unscathed? Will they return to the MCU? And if so, when? After watching the movie, I will say that most of the answers to these questions are right there; They are not at all what you would expect, but they do expect you to feel passionate about it. Find out for yourself when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Opens May 5th.
