TL; DR

  • Qualcomm introduces a new upscaling technology called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution.
  • Qualcomm claims its upscaling technology can boost games from 1080p to 4K and from 30 FPS to 60 and more FPS.
  • Mobile games and XR products that use this technology will be launched later this year.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has done a lot to take Android gaming to the next level. Even ROG Phone 7, the mobile gaming powerhouse, is based on this SoC. And it seems Qualcomm, the manufacturer of the chip, isn’t quite done with optimizing mobile games. The company is launching a new technology that should give games an increase in fidelity and performance while reducing battery drain.

Qualcomm announced today via a blog post that it is rolling out a new upgrade technology for mobile games and XR products. The new technology is called Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR), and it aims to maximize mobile gaming performance and battery life. Not only will the GSR be for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones, but it will bring improvements to phones with older chips as well.

Upscaling is good for performance and battery life because it allows the game to run at lower resolutions without sacrificing quality. As the blog points out, most of the upscaling techniques use bilinear interpolation (bilerp). However, “it can affect graphics quality by blurring edges and details.”

Snapdragon GSR 4K Upscaling

According to the company, GSR uses new technology to raise the resolution, frame rate, and battery life. It is described as “a single-pass spatial upscaling technology optimized for Snapdragon Adreno graphics processing units (GPUs).” Most techniques require two passes. So this single pass system is able to reduce memory usage, bandwidth, latency and battery usage.

Qualcomm claims that its new technology can boost Android games from 1080p to 4K and from 30fps to 60fps and more. It also states that GSR offers “twice the performance improvement over other mobile upgrade solutions”.

Android games and XR products with GSR should begin rolling out later this year. The company has already partnered with a number of companies to bring GSR titles such as Call of Duty Warzone Mobile, Jade Dynasty: New Fantasy, and Farming Simulator 23 Mobile.
