It looks like there are plans for Google to update its Material You Design language for Android 14.
As spotted by 9to5Google, Google’s design team on Twitter to publish A thirty-second video about Material You that had some noticeable color tweaks. The colors in the video appear much bolder and brighter than the pastel hues of today’s design language. While the updated colors aren’t available in the Android 14 test, 9to5 discovered the patterns in Google’s open source code.

The demo presented featured a simple color picker, allowing the user to choose the color they would like their phone to decorate. Other built-in options shown in the images can give users a chance to fine-tune their phone’s design and find the right color for them. This updated color language will continue to enable Android 14 to pull colors from your wallpaper, just like what phones running Android 13 or 12 currently do.
Further testing showed that even when you use the phone’s dark mode, the base color you choose will remain. Other elements of the phone (such as text) will change to better fit your desired UI look.
Finally, 9to5 speculates that this change in material coloration, from dull to dark, may be a result of the ‘fidelity’ pattern choice. The purpose is to ensure that the user’s preferred base color is actually used in the final result of the phone’s user interface.
Google recently released Android 14 Beta 1.1 to users in the program and it came packed with bug fixes. With Google I/O 2023 just a couple of weeks away, big discoveries and Android development progress will be among the topics discussed. However, with a discolored material change like this, maybe Google will show users more of what’s already in store.
The company posted a list of sessions yesterday and one of the topics to be discussed was “What’s New in Material Design”. This segment follows the developer’s keynote (after Pichai’s keynote speech), giving interested parties an insight into “our latest evolution of our design language, Material You, and a look at our vision for the future of design systems.”
